Early Bird Triathlon
I woke up early on Saturday morning and headed to Ottawa for my first race of the year. It was an earlier than usual morning as I am an extra hour from Ottawa now that we live in Kingston. The alarm went off at 4:15am, yikes. I picked up my race package and prepared my bike in transition before heading to the water for the swim start. This race is an annual one for me, always my first of the season.
The swim went well. I had an easy go of it with not much contact. My time was faster than my previous swims at this event so I was pleased! Next I jumped on the bike and head out on the course. The conditions were good for the first 2/3 of the bike but then the skies opened up and I got soaked. I had to back off a little bit just to make sure I was safe but I still managed slightly over a 33 km/hr pace for the entire bike. It was time for the run. I think i went a bit too hard on the bike as my legs weren’t feeling it right from the first kilometre of the run. I just kept telling myself that it was an early season race and there was no need to worry about it. My run time was 45 seconds slower than last year, but I was not surprised. I haven’t been as dedicated to my training schedule this winter and spring.
Now I have a starting point for improvement over the season. Hopefully be the end of the season I will be in a better place than I was last year at the same time. I also met a few of my online triathlon friends at the race. It was neat to meet them in person after a few years of encouraging each other on dailymile.com .
This past week I travelled 111 kms during my training.
See you at the finish line…..
